Safety protocols are designed to protect patients. Where surgeries are concerned, one of the most critical safety measures is the “time-out,” which is a mandatory pause before the procedure to ensure that everything is correct and in place.
Skipping this step isn’t just a procedural violation – it’s a mistake that can lead to severe consequences for the patient and potential malpractice.
What are the key components of a surgical time-out?
The protocol for a surgical time-out was intentionally designed to involve the whole surgical team at once so that they can:
- Confirm the patient’s name, date of birth and other identifying information
- Ensure that the correct surgical procedure is about to be performed
- Confirm that the correct surgical site (such as the right knee or left hand) is targeted
- Check to make sure that all team members understand their responsibilities
- Review the anesthesia plan and make sure that the risks have been addressed
- Confirm that all the necessary tools for the procedure are ready
- Review the patient’s medical history with an eye toward allergies or complicating conditions
While all this can take just a minute or two, the time-out is a necessary pause in what can otherwise be a stressful, fast-paced encounter to make sure that everyone is on the same page. It helps prevent wrong-site, wrong-procedure and wrong-patient errors, which can be devastating for the patient.
