California is a wonderful place for motorcycling. With many scenic routes and a robust biking community, it’s a haven for local bikers as well as those traveling from out of state.

Motorcycle accidents are something nobody wants to think about. However, it’s important to be aware of the common causes of motorcycle crashes so you can be aware and attentive, reducing the risk of getting into an accident yourself.

5 biggest contributing factors

According to a fact sheet by Berkley University of California, these are the top five contributing factors in serious or fatal motorcycle crashes:

  • Speeding: Speeding on the part of the biker or the driver plays a role in nearly 30 percent of all crashes in California.
  • Right-of-way violations: Failure to yield and other right-of-way violations account for nearly 20 percent of crashes.
  • Improper turns: Drivers cutting bikers off or turning in front of motorcycles contribute to more than 15 percent of crashes.
  • DUI: Driving or biking under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a contributing factor in nearly 10 percent of crashes.
  • Lane changes: Dangerous or improper lane changes contribute to more than 5 percent of motorcycle accidents.

Bikers can reduce their chances of an accident by never getting on a motorcycle while intoxicated, always staying at a safe speed, exercising caution with turns and lane changes, and anticipating risks.

Experience can also play a role in avoiding motorcycle accidents. Nearly half of all injured bikers are males between the ages of 15 and 34, suggesting that younger, more inexperienced bikers are more likely to get hurt on the road.
